IMESS Student Handbook
Welcome to IMESS!
IMESS is a unique Masters programme offering you the chance to study the economies, states and societies of Central and Eastern Europe over a two-year programme offered by a consortium of leading European universities coordinated by UCL. The UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) hosts the first year of the programme before students then spend the whole of the second year at one of our partner Universities in Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Hungary or Poland.
The online student handbook materials contain essential information that you will need before and during your time on the IMESS programme. It provides information relevant to the entire two-year programme, though with a particular focus on the first year, which all IMESS students spend in London.
SSEES, founded in 1915, is one of the world’s leading specialist institutions and the largest national centre in the UK for the study of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Over seventy academic staff work in the School, teaching and conducting research in economics, business, politics, history, sociology, anthropology, culture, literature and language. In 2009/2010 almost 200 graduate students and over 500 undergraduate students are studying at the School.
The IMESS Programme is SSEES's flagship Masters Programme and in 2007 was selected from a very competitive European field for the prestigious title of ‘Erasmus Mundus Masters'. Among other things, this means that, together with our consortium partners, we are able to offer Erasmus Mundus scholarships for this unique two-year double-degree Masters programme. SSEES is very much embedded within the Central and Eastern European area and the regular visits of our staff reinforce contacts with commerce, government and NGOs in these countries; and the visits to the School of eminent figures from the region, including ambassadors, foreign ministers and presidents, continue to add a sense of immediacy to our studies and help prepare you for the second year of the programme - which you will spend in the region itself.
Across our consortium partners, we pride ourselves on being friendly and welcoming while endeavouring to inspire. Our partners share with us a deep and long lasting commitment to the UCL vision of ‘making a difference’ both to the students we work with and to the wider world. IMESS really does offer you a unique and unparalleled opportunity to study the economies, states and societies of this vital area of the world and so, on behalf of the entire consortium, it is my pleasure to welcome you to IMESS.
